What You Need to Know About Palliative Care and How it Relates to Survivorship

Presented by Tom Smith, M.D.

Dr. Tom Smith, one of the foremost leaders in the field of palliative care, is a medical oncologist and the Director of Palliative Care for Johns Hopkins Medicine and the Hopkins’ Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center.  He is board certified in oncology, palliative, and hospice medicine.   Throughout his career, Dr. Smith has focused on providing physical, emotional and spiritual support for seriously ill individuals and their families that enhances quality of life and minimizes suffering.

During his presentation, he will discuss tips for helping patients stay healthy for as long as possible, balancing risk/benefits of treatment, advanced directives, living wills, current Maryland laws surrounding life-ending illnesses, managing expectations, when to get palliative care and hospice involved, and suggestions for helping friends and family stay supportive.

Please join us for a facilitated discussion of these and other related questions.  You are encouraged to bring and share your experiences with pallative care. HopeWell's Program Director, Carole Sharp, LCSW-C will give an overview of the support programs offered by HopeWell Cancer Support as an example of a valuable community resource for cancer survivors.
